Ms. Constance M. Alexander

Ms. Constance Marie Alexander, 69, 414 E. Myrtle Ave, died Monday, July 28, 2025, at Johnson City Medical Center after a lengthy illness with her family by her side. She was born on December 25, 1955, “Our Christmas Baby” in Johnson City, TN, to the late Charles and Frances Alexander. She was a member of Friendship Baptist Church, where she was an active member of Sunday School, Gracie Norris Missionary Circle, and Children's Church. She loved church, and it showed. She praised the Lord all the time and her light shined brightly. Constance attended Dunbar for a year, and then she became one of the first blacks to integrate Northside Elementary School. Her mother sat her on the school curb until they finally let her in. She graduated from Science Hill High School and attended Northeast State Community College with a 2-year degree in Office Administration. She held a couple of temp secretary jobs until she began working at East Tennessee State University. She worked as the Office Coordinator for the Dean in the College of Arts & Sciences, working with five different deans. She retired on October 30, 2020, after 32 years. Constance loved Halloween and Christmas and celebrated her birthday the whole month of December. She loved dressing up for Halloween, and she wore Christmas attire the entire month of December. She loved dancing and was the life of the party. She loved her Westerns and court shows. To know Constance was to love her; she was Mama Connie to so many, and her favorite saying was, "Yeahhhhhhhhhh, Ain't Nothing but a Party.” She was preceded in death by her parents, Charles and Frances Alexander; her grandparents, Jaffer and Corrie McKinney, and Della Bell; her great-grandmother, Elizabeth Rollins; two sisters, Odessa Johnson and Marion Brady; two brothers, Thomas Alexander and Thaddeus Alexander; and her best friend, Penny Hunter. Survivors include her "Honey," Gary “Big G’s” Johnson; son, Gerald E. Alexander; daughter, Heather D. (Rev. Timothy C.) Jeffries of Tuscaloosa AL; seven grandchildren, Corinna Dean of Nashville, David Alexander, Jordan (Brittany) Alexander, J’Keeyah Alexander of Tuscaloosa AL, Eric Burton, Jr. of Tuscaloosa AL, Julius Alexander of Atlanta GA, and Kayden Hale; 10 great-grandchildren, Michael Taylor, Tremont Stem, Journi Stem, Kyrie Stem, Khian Lewis, Dereon Alexander, Zayden Alexander, Alexis, Jamari, and J’Mir Alexander; one aunt, Lollie Surratt, the Matriarch of the family, of Johnson City; four siblings, Mildred Smith of Herndon VA, William (Kitt) Alexander of Waverly TN, Martha Harris of Jonesborough TN, and Mary (James) Latham of College Park, GA; her niece/sister Mildred Williams of Herndon VA; best friend, Emma (George) White of Johnson City; two goddaughters, Lillie Hairston and Amyiah Henry of Tuscaloosa AL; and several nieces, nephews, friends, and foes.
