Dr. Angela H Claxton-Freeman

Dr. Angela H. Claxton-Freeman, 63, went home to be with the Lord on January 17, 2018. Angela was a remarkable woman who dedicated her life to family, friends, and the community. Known for her pursuit of excellence, love of fun and determination, Angela left an indelible impression on all she encountered. A native of St. Louis, Missouri, Angela was born to Donald and Wilma Claxton on December 7, 1954. The fourth of six children born to this union, Angela was preceded in death by her parents and brothers Donald and Gregory Claxton. She leaves to cherish her memory a devoted daughter Andrea Freeman; beloved siblings Donnetta Moorman, Anquanette Claxton, and Fredrick Claxton; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends. Angela began her professional career at the Girl Scout Council of Greater St. Louis in 1977. She loved the Girl Scout movement and took full advantage of the opportunities it provided to pursue a variety of passions including camping, fishing, white water rafting and horseback riding; motivating young women to be strong and courageous and living a life of leadership while serving God. After a 16 year tenure as Chief Executive Officer of the Appalachian Girl Scout Council in Johnson City, Tennessee, Angela retired in 2009. Despite her longtime dream of becoming a beach bum and selling beach chairs and umbrellas, Angela began graduate school at East Tennessee State University and earned a Masters in Public Administration and Doctorate in Educational Leadership and Policy Analysis. Angela included these words in the Dedication of her dissertation: “This effort is dedicated to God and my family, both have brought me thus far by faith. To my sister Donnetta, in appreciation for your encouraging words, confidence and faith. You too my sister Anquanette – for your practicality I am grateful. You have provided life lessons that contributed to my independence and can-do attitude. Andrea, you are the best daughter a Mom could ever hope for. You make me proud and driven to be the best that I can be. To my brother Fredrick who wins the award for resilience. To all my nieces and nephews – may you continue in your youth to be blessed with bright ideas and questions to ask the world. To my Johnson City spiritual family – thank you for your support and encouragement – thank you for keeping me in your prayers. A special thanks to my adoptive families: the Rutledge’s, the Williams, the Halls, and the Katie Dave family for keeping me sane and insane! I also give posthumous acknowledgements to my Mom and Gram Mable, who sacrificed to make opportunities for exposure to higher education for me and future generations, and for enduring my rebellion with unconditional love and motivational incentives.” When asked about the legacy she desired to leave, Angela replied “I want my family and friends to know that the battle is not yours – it’s the Lord’s! Fervent prayer changes things – it renews your mind. While I’ve not always been faithful, the Lord has been. Be reconciled with Him. Seek peace within yourself and with others, and know that God is not afraid of your dirt. Turn to Him and He will destroy giants on your behalf and give you rest.”
